Vinux 5.1 releases Ubuntu-based Linux distribution

Vinux 5.1 is released. Vinux is a distribution evolved from Ubuntu, optimized for the needs of blind and low-vision users. Vinux provides two screen readers by default, as well as display support for Braille and a friendly user community. When booting from this self-starting running image, the user will be greeted by the Orca reader, which allows users to browse the graphical GNOME desktop through keyboard commands. In addition, Brltty also provides Level 1 and Level 2 Braille output through Orca.

Vinux provides a screen reader, braille support and high-contrast icons.

The latest version of the project, Vinux 5.1, is based on Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS and provides three desktop environments: Unity 7.2.4, GNOME 3.10.4 and MATE 1.8. This release is not only about the features of the Unity desktop, but also GNOME Shell and the popular GNOME 2 fork — called MATE, although it will mainly support Unity.

Also remember that the development team recommends that users perform regular updates. This will enable the Vinux team to update the software package and introduce new features.

The release notes mentioned a change in the console voice return: "Since Vinux 5.1 no longer uses ConsoleKit, we cannot introduce changes to the Vinux 4.0 console voice. Please refer to wiki for more information. Use Speechd-up Log in to the desktop session and run sudo speechd-up from the GNOME terminal or add startup items to automatically execute at login".
