Ubuntu 17.10 will replace LightDM login manager with GDM

In a recent report, Canonical’s Will Cooke revealed that the Ubuntu Desktop team is considering replacing the LightDM login manager with GDM (GNOME Display Manager) in the upcoming Ubuntu 17.10 version. Earlier this week, there were rumors that Ubuntu 17.10 will use the GNOME GDM display manager.

Especially now, by default, ISO images built daily use the GNOME desktop environment instead of Unity by default. Now, Canonical officially confirmed that they do not have time for LightDM to work with GNOME.

Canonical officially stated: “We decided to switch to GNOME Display Manager (GDM) instead of LightDM. We plan to try LightDM. According to our survey, we need to invest a lot of time to make changes to make everything work properly, but We didn’t use that much time."

Canonical decided to stop developing its internal Unity user interface and replace it with the more popular GNOME desktop environment used in the Ubuntu 17.10 (Artful Aardvark) operating system. Now, the latest daily Build ISO image of Ubuntu 17.10 still uses the LightDM login manager by default, but it is expected that GDM will be adopted on the first Alpha milestone version launched on June 29, 2017.
